“...Guenter’s musical prowess is world renowned but perhaps never so profoundly so as with this, the first release of his latest project, called SCHULZ. The tracks highlight more of the anthemic power chord stylings of Schulz, as well as his well known transitions and catchy hooks, but this time fronted with Jeff Borden’s inescapable talent on vocals.

From the low growly and guttural vocal presence on React, (Borden's) wonderful Lemmy’esque delivery and styles provide the perfect counterpoint to Schulz’s musical guitar assault. On Envision, the team delivers perfect seminal punk execution. As an outstanding contrast, their version of Joy Division’s, Love Will Tear Us Apart shows a brooding melancholic side of both players, perhaps one of the finest covers of the magical classic in years.

Fans of the new and old industrial and punk schools will celebrate this stripped down, more rock, less industrial, and least KMFDM, Guenter Schulz album.

"I thought great music only came once in a lifetime. It is music like this that makes me glad I'm publishing again. Schulz is very diverse musicially and they mix it up quite well throughout the entire disc. This didn't hit me at first listen but this has grown on me a lot. They explore metal, rock and old school sounding speed metal. But they don't stop there, there is also some old style sexy funk being played as well as some atmospheric electronica. The vocals also compliment the music on every track which makes for an ear pleasing experience. Everything comes through with enough passion so nothing seems fake or forced. A big plus here is their awesome cover of Joy Divisions "Love Will Tear Us Apart". I can see this band being the next big thing if they want to be. This disc should be heard by everyone."

"While listening to “What Apology”, the album of Schulz, one is tossed to and fro between numerous styles and associations. And this makes it actually a very entertaining album. Opening tune ‘This is what I did to me!’ reminds me a lot of Danko Jones-like rock songs. A few songs later, we get to listen to ‘React’, which gives me an idea of Monster Magnet. A heavy thumping track like ‘March’ could easily be released by Jello Biafra. The following horney tune ‘I feel fine’ would have been very appropriate in an eighties porn movie. ‘Fear Tactic’ has a – you guessed it correctly – very high Fear Factory feeling to it. In most of the remaining tracks, I tend to hear Ministry or some other American industrial act.

The rock ‘n roll flows out of your speakers and therefore “What Apology” is very easy to listen to. It’s remarkable to hear what Jeff Borden can do with his voice. His sound is strong and convincing and he seems to be capable of dealing with a lot of different singing styles. Next to this, Guenter Schulz (guitars, bass and programming) knows his instruments well and the music therefore sounds very professional and nicely produced. The more tracks we get to listen to, the more one really notices that this duo knows how to create a well thought out album. At the appropriate times, the pace is somewhat slowed down and when at the end of this record we get to listen to two laidback tracks, the listener is satisfied and relaxed hanging back in the couch.

One very big minus is the rocky cover of ‘Love will tear us apart’. Usually I like a nicely performed cover, but the sleazy version of this classic is really inappropriate.

This is however the main minus, because overall I have to say that these two gentlemen know their way in several (rock)genres and show us with the release of “What Apology” that they can create a coherent album."

"Geunter Schulz is a god of rock. Now the former KMFDM guitar torturer has put his wizardly fingers to work in a neu-rock duo that holds only the master’s name as its moniker. Actually, this tidy little screamer harkens back to all the finest alternative industrial metal noise of a more than decade ago. It has that swing to it. Schulz has teamed up with some gritty growler named Jeff (Lizzy) Borden to chop the rock and grind up the pieces. Tight may not describe the gated drum throb or Schulz’s controlled melt, and the 11-tracker fits best on those sparkly days when you’ve had just a little too much Red Bull. A cover of angst-rock classic Love Will Tear Us Apart has Schulz riding the sustain pedal into a spacey flow until the chorus, at which time the riffage takes a decidedly more complex path."

"SCHULZ is the new blastingly powerful musical creation of Guenter Schulz (ex-KMFDM) and Jeff Borden (House of Commons). Combine Guenter’s heavy guitar riffing (he is thought by many to be the top guitarist in industrial rock) and Jeff’s incisive street level lyrics and you have a potent brew that smashes into your consciousness. One would have to say that SCHULZ is not merely industrial rock (Guenter was a huge part of KMFDM from 1989 to 1999, co-producing and playing on their best selling albums) and they also combine just a hint of Motorhead style rock, along with Jeff’s ultra gravelly singing to make “What Apology” a wholly blistering CD. And dare I say, there is a lot of catchy melodic interplay between the guitars and vocals.

What Apology kicks off with “Resolve” its heavy guitar riff jolts you just as much as its lyrics, that unflinching look at drug abuse and the sheer determination it takes to get back control of one’s life. “Envision”, is next with its great hypnotic groove. You will get plowed over by the screaming riffs, vocals and double kick drums of “React” and “March”. “Lowtrack” rolls along like a classic Iggy Pop track. As What Apology progresses, some of the tracks take on a dreamy and erotic quality. As well “Accept” is a cool trance-like club tune.

Jeff Borden comes from Vancouver’s underground punk scene, he played drums in the seminal punk band House of Commons. Combine that with Guenter Schulz’s great track record with KMFDM and you come up with a very potent outfit. What Apology was produced by Guenter. Their debut album is here and Sudden Death Records is unleashing it to the world.

Released on Sudden Death and available March 1st, 2006.

"What Apology is the latest collaborative effort from former KMFDM
guitarist Gunter Schultz. Working with Jeff Borden of House of Commons fame, What Apology is a brilliant produced disc and shows why some people think Gunter is one of the premier guitarists in industrial music. From the punk influenced Resolve to the hard pounding of March there are blistering guitar riffs mixed with incredible programming and sweet low end on bass. Adding to an already incredible disc is the vox provided by Jeff Bordon. I dare say he may have on of the sexiest voices I’ve heard on a man in a long time. His deep resonating lyrics flowing over your body like the hands of a lover on the sexy soulful Uncertainty then switch back to screaming urgency on React. With What Apology both men have managed to bring out the best in each other as artist to create something truly amazing.
